Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a widely recognised mark of achievement, respected by employers and further educational providers. It is available to young people aged 14 – 24, broken down into three award levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Through the sections of each award, students develop and demonstrate a range of valuable qualities including teamwork, problem solving, determination, self-reflection and organisation.
During students’ time at Hungerhill, they will be given the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh award. In Year 9, students will begin the application process and start to complete the relevant sections: Volunteering, Skills and Physical. Students will then take part in a training expedition and an assessed expedition within Year 10.
The expedition section focuses on developing the students’ outdoor skills including map reading, first aid procedures, assembling a tent and outdoor cooking. Alongside an overnight camping experience, students will plan and take part in a 6hr planned activity each day which will be assessed against the Duke of Edinburgh code of conduct.
Here is what our students who have taken part in the Duke of Edinburgh said:
‘I enjoyed improving my map and navigation skills as well as having a better understanding of the environment around me’
‘It gave me the opportunity to help the local community and spend time outdoors’
‘I found motivation to learn new skills’
‘I was able to carry on with the extra activities I already took part in and be rewarded for it’
