Student Leadership
Developing student leadership across the school is very important to us at Hungerhill as when given the opportunity, young people can have a profound impact on school improvement from a more inclusive rewards system to working towards the gold anti-bullying charter mark and lots in-between!
Involvement in leadership activities can improve students’ learning as well as helping them to develop the skills and traits needed for success outside of the classroom. Being a student leader can provide students with a range of opportunities and help them develop key skills such as communication, both written and verbal, through involvement in activities such as presentations and leading assemblies. Organisational skills will also be developed through planning and leading whole school events. Prioritisation, listening and feedback skills are also amongst the core skills developed.
Hungerhill School’s student leadership programme aims to increase the opportunities for student leadership across the school and to enhance the input students have with key school policies, whole school events and student well-being. Two major leadership groups are our Form Reps and Year 11 Student Leaders, both of which are recruited at the end of the previous school year to start their role in September of the new school year. Alongside these prestigious leadership roles, we also have our Student Ambassador groups which are more specific in their aims and largely focused around a specific subject. Students can join as many of these groups as they like to build confidence, knowledge and team-work skills.
The Student Ambassador roles are listed below:

Our Year 11 student leaders are divided into four sub-groups to work on the following objectives:
- Charity and Enrichment
- Anti-bullying and Wellbeing
- Equality and Diversity
- Student Leadership
Each group works with staff and senior leaders on an implantation plan over the year to achieve great things and raise awareness in each area.
Here is a taster of what each group is working on:
- Charity and Enrichment – this group runs many charity events including the Christmas Fair. In addition to this, they assist with the interform charity events each term and support staff with the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. They also support staff with the running of enrichment and extra-curricular clubs where needed.
- Anti-bullying and Wellbeing – the previous student leader cohorts secured the Anti-Bullying Charter Mark Silver and Gold Awards for the school. Our current cohort are continuing to work on anti-bullying, promoting our anti-bullying pledges, monitoring the worry box, leading on assemblies and more. They are also raising awareness of mental health through assemblies and form time activities.
- Equality and Diversity - this group work on the Stonewall award, promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion. They also run a Safe Space lunchtime club and lead on assemblies to raise awareness of the importance of diversity and acceptance. A major focus for this year is promoting the Protected Characteristics and building students’ knowledge of the various strands.
- Student Leadership – this group works on the range of ambassador groups available and assist with the promotion and running of these groups. They monitor the quality of the leadership opportunities over the year and continue to promote the importance and benefits of taking up leadership roles. A new remit for this group is also to run leadership workshops for our younger budding leaders to build future capacity and the leaders of tomorrow!
